The posted compensation range of $17.24 - $24.35 /hour is a reasonable estimate that extends from the lowest to the highest pay CommonSpirit in good faith believes it might pay for this particular job, based on the circumstances at the time of posting. CommonSpirit may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range as permitted by law.

Job Summary and Responsibilities

As a Discharge Specialist, under the supervision of the Office Supervisor the primary function is a support role for the coordination of clinical discharging of cancer patients from Radiation Oncology.

Every day, you will be processing physician orders, directing exams and tests in proper sequence for results to be available as needed for a cancer patient’s care.

To be successful, you will efficiently communicate with nursing staff, therapists, and physicians when challenges arise during a patient discharge ensuring positive patient satisfaction.The Discharge Specialist applies critical thinking skills to the patient’s needs and ensures patients are assigned to Center for Cancer Support for assistance when barriers to care arise.

1. After all clinical encounters and final radiation therapy treatments in the Radiation Oncology department the Specialist will discharge all patients.
2. Coordinates and manages the return office visits, physician ordered procedures, and referrals to outside providers.
3. Provides day-today administrative support to Office Supervisor when necessary.
4. Handles incoming and outgoing correspondence as needed in relation to all returning established patients.
5. Coordinates the arrangements for multiple appointments for different providers for patients to sequence for the correct plan of care.
6. Reviews physician orders for accuracy and completeness.
7. Ensures all related documentation are scanned and filed in the EMR (EPIC & Aria).
8. Schedules imaging and procedures through the CHI Memorial system to eliminate the need of contacting central scheduling.
9. Coordinates the call back and rescheduling of the patient no-show / cancellation lists to ensure continuation of care with the Radiation Oncologist, Medical Oncologist, Specialists, and Primary Care Physicians.
10. Maintains a professional attitude when dealing with patients and/or families as well as other providers.
11. Provides backup assistance to administrative team when necessary.
12. Orders supplies when required, attends meetings / huddles as requested, and serves as resource for scheduling issues.

13. Works with Tennessee Oncology schedulers to coordinate upcoming appointments.

14. Other duties as assigned by management.


Job Requirements
  • High school education or equivalent
  • Medical Office Technology Diploma preferred
  • Certification or eligible for certification in medical secretarial or office assistant required. 
  • Computer skills, professional communication skills, scheduling within EPIC and/or Aria, correct use of medical terminology, processing and coordination of outpatient orders, scanning, and multi-tasking are required.
