The posted compensation range of $118.89 - $176.84 /hour is a reasonable estimate that extends from the lowest to the highest pay CommonSpirit in good faith believes it might pay for this particular job, based on the circumstances at the time of posting. The System Director of Clinical Epidemiology Physician Leader will serve as a leading subject matter expert in a specialized domain such as vaccine-preventable diseases, emerging pathogens, antimicrobial stewardship, or advanced epidemiological data science. Leveraging deep expertise, the System Medical Director of Epidemiology will drive evidence-based approaches for management of infectious diseases and standard of care for antimicrobial stewardship, complex analytical projects, provide informed insights from surveillance methodologies, and implement innovative strategies to enhance population health and patient safety across our diverse care settings.
This role is designed for a visionary leader who can operate autonomously, providing high-level expertise, consultation and thought leadership in their area of specialty. The successful candidate will be instrumental in identifying and interpreting epidemiological trends, translating complex data into actionable insights for clinical and operational leaders, and mentoring junior epidemiological staff. They will be critical in advancing CommonSpirit Health's mission by applying epidemiological principles to address pressing public health challenges and optimize healthcare delivery outcomes.
This role requires strong leadership to assemble and guide ad-hoc teams and multidisciplinary groups for specific investigations, evidence based clinical standard review, and/or critical projects. The System Medical Director of Epidemiology will collaborate across various departments, championing evidence-based practices and influencing policy through rigorous epidemiological analysis and compelling communication.
Essential Functions Include (but not limited to):
Serve as Subject Matter Expert: Provide authoritative expertise and lead strategic initiatives in a designated epidemiological area (e.g., vaccine-preventable diseases, emerging infectious diseases, antimicrobial stewardship principles, advanced epidemiological modeling, or population health surveillance).
Lead Complex Analytical Projects: Design, execute, and interpret advanced epidemiological studies and analyses, translating findings into actionable recommendations for clinical practice, and policy development.
Develop & Refine Surveillance Methodologies: Innovate and implement sophisticated surveillance systems, data collection protocols, and analytic tools to proactively identify health trends, threats, and opportunities for improvement across the CommonSpirit system.
Drive Ad-Hoc Investigations: Assemble, lead, and direct multidisciplinary ad-hoc teams for urgent epidemiological investigations, outbreak responses, or rapid assessments, ensuring timely and effective resolution.
Mentor & Educate Staff: Provide expert guidance, technical mentorship, and education to junior epidemiologists, infection preventionists, and other clinical staff on epidemiological principles, methods, and best practices.
Disseminate Findings & Consult: Prepare and present comprehensive epidemiological reports, peer-reviewed publications, and high-level summaries for diverse audiences, including executive leadership, clinical teams, and external stakeholders, acting as a crucial internal consultant.
Job Requirements
Experience and Education Requirements:
- Medical degree and doctor of medicine license.
- Board certification in a related epidemiology field (required to maintain certification for continued employment).
- Minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in applied epidemiology within a large healthcare system, public health agency, or academic medical center.
- Experience in translating complex epidemiological data and findings into clear, actionable recommendations for diverse audiences, including executive leadership and clinical team.
- Experience leading multidisciplinary teams in antimicrobial stewardship initiatives.
- Experience mentoring junior staff, leading project teams, or providing direct consultation on epidemiological matters is essential.
- 5 years clinical practice in infection disease is preferred.
