Responsibilities

The incumbent is responsible for transporting patients between departments within the hospital; assisting with moving and lifting patients on the care units; transporting specimens and equipment such as wheelchairs and gurneys between departments. Answer phones and direct calls as needed and perform other duties as assigned. Demonstrates competency in patient care for the pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patient. May access medication storage areas in accordance with their job function and hospital policy.

Core Duties:

Maintains patient safety while transporting patients to and from various departments within the hospital by appropriate means: wheelchair, gurney, bed, or by ambulation; utilizes lift devices safely and appropriately

Uses two patient identifiers, in accordance with National Patient Safety Goals, to ensure patient identity 100% of the time

Transports equipment and specimens to and from various departments within the hospital, responding to calls by delivering requested equipment within 15 minutes

Reports equipment issues to supervisor or seeks appropriate resources for repairs within one hour

Informs department staff immediately of any patient status changes and delays and notifies the care team members whenever a patient leaves or returns to the nursing unit

Records each patient transport accurately on the nursing unit each time a patient is transported; observes all patient precautions identified at the bedside

Maintains complete and accurate Patient Transportation Log within the Imaging Department

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Six (6) months of related experience in healthcare required
  • Requires knowledge of: Proper body mechanics and patient safety
  • The organization of an acute care hospital and related facilities
  • Medical terminology
  • Current BLS from AHA

Requires ability to:

  • Lift patients onto gurney and to assist them into and out of a wheelchair
  • Read and comprehend instructions written in English
  • Use courtesy and tact when dealing with patients, visitors, and hospital staff
  • Calm and reassure distressed patients
  • Maintain patient confidentiality
  • Follow established protocols
  • Work effectively under multiple priorities and adjust priorities, as circumstances require
  • Maintain a high degree of accuracy regarding all details
  • Establish and maintain a satisfactory cooperative working relationship with coworkers and supervisors in the department, hospital and service area
