Responsibilities

Is the market subject matter resource on all Environment of Care safety issues for a designated market/hospital: issues may include industrial hygiene, chemical safety and hygiene, construction safety, fire and life safety, environmental protection and general workplace safety. The position is responsible for coordinating within the market all ongoing safety programs, implementation of new safety programs, and developing necessary processes for identifying opportunities for improvement in code compliance relating to Environment of Care issues as outlined in the accreditation standards for Healthcare Organizations. Position reports to Division Manager ‐ Facilities and Safety with direct oversight of daily operations for Safety Specialists at each market.


ESSENTIAL KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Provide advice and assistance to all levels of management within the market in the development and application of physical & environmental safety programs, and policies and procedures, in order to comply with all applicable local, state & federal statutes.
2. Coordinate program compliance structure that is directly related to national and local regulatory requirements, to include Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) health care program requirements.
3. Conduct audits and assessments to ensure continual compliance with all applicable local, state & federal regulatory agencies, accreditation Environment of Care requirements and CHI St. Luke’s program standards.
4. Assist in the management of life safety and utility shutdown permitting programs. Provide input and direction for Interim Life Safety Measures and workplace safety requirements for all construction & renovation projects.
5. Support and advise on all fire and life safety compliance in meeting local, state and federal requirements including International Fire Code (IFC), International Building Code (IBC), NFPA and other local Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ)
requirements.
6. Participate in EPA Healthcare Program Development and Management to include all waste disposal, recycling, Asbestos Containing Material (ACM) and Moisture Damaged Material (MDM) programs for all market locations.

7. Coordinate OSHA and general safety regulatory compliance on all market locations and support OSHA Safety Data Sheet (SDS) programs.
8. Assist with development and management of employee chemical exposure, ergonomics and noise monitoring programs.
9. Provide input and recommendations concerning safety related accident investigations.
10. Conduct safety training and orientation(s) as appropriate.
11. Participate in Hospital Environment of Care committee(s) and other safety related committees or workgroups as needed.
12. Responsible for management of team members including evaluation of appropriate staffing and structure. Orient, on‐board and train new staff members. Timely evaluation of the performance of direct reports. Provide oversight of departmental budget.
13. Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree ‐ a related field or may substitute an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Five (5) years of experience in health care and safety compliance field.

Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Training

  • Code Interpretation – Ability to read, analyze and interpret applicable federal, state and local compliance codes as they relate to healthcare.
