The posted compensation range of $36.00 - $52.20 /hour is a reasonable estimate that extends from the lowest to the highest pay CommonSpirit in good faith believes it might pay for this particular job, based on the circumstances at the time of posting. CommonSpirit may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range as permitted by law.
The incumbent provides comprehensive care to high risk infants and educates family members in the care of the neonate
in order to maintain health and prevent health problems. The incumbent works under a practice agreement with a
supervising neonatologist, and also works collaboratively with a multi-disciplinary health team, including but not limited
to neonatology, respiratory therapy, pediatric sub-specialty areas, primary care pediatrics and nursing. The position will
allow for students in their last semester of an approved NNP (MSN/DNP) program to fulfill their clinical hours as well as
gain experience leading to an easier transition toward independent practice. The intern will work in conjunction with a
licensed and credentialed Neonatal Nurse Practitioner at all times during the internship.
ESSENTIAL KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Implements care to high risk neonates.
2. Establishes medical diagnoses. Orders and evaluates diagnostic studies. Utilizes sound clinical decision-making in
performing and monitoring therapeutic procedures, including, but not limited to:
Umbilical vessel catheterization
Endotracheal intubation
Bag and mask ventilation
Introduction of percutaneous catheters for intravascular infusions
Needle aspiration of pneumothorax
Performance of peripheral arterial puncture for blood samples
Insertion of chest tubes
Bladder needle puncture and aspiration
Lumbar puncture
Arterial blood gases
3. Prescribes and regulates medications, fluids, nutritional flow rate and caloric balances.
4. Documents management of care in the patients’ electronic medical record.
5. Conducts daily rounds on assigned patients with Neonatologists and nursing staff.
6. Communicates with parents of high risk neonates by updating their knowledge and promoting their
participation in the care of their infant.
7. Assists nursing staff to attain optimum quality care for patients. Participates in the development, review and
revision of nursing care policies, procedures and standards. Develops innovations and initiates change in clinical
practice, based upon current nursing and research literature.
8. Takes direct and indirect responsibility for implementation of an appropriate teaching plan for parents / families
to include knowledge of routine NICU care, problem management, normal growth and development, parenting
skills and discharge needs of the neonate. Involves the parent/family in planning the neonate’s care; works with
them to obtain appropriate community home care referrals.
Job Requirements
Required Education and Experience Current enrollment in last semester of an approved MSN or
DNP Neonatal Nurse Practitioner Program.
Required Licensure and Certifications Current Nebraska RN Licensure; NRP Certification
Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
and Training
At least 2 years of Neonatal Intensive Care Unit experience as a RN.
