The posted compensation range of $31.76 - $35.68 /hour is a reasonable estimate that extends from the lowest to the highest pay CommonSpirit in good faith believes it might pay for this particular job, based on the circumstances at the time of posting. CommonSpirit may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range as permitted by law.

Job Summary and Responsibilities

The incumbent prepares instruments and equipment for sterilization in all surgical services areas. This includes decontamination, assembly and packaging in accordance with manufacturer's instructions. The incumbent coordinates instrument repair and maintenance with a contracted vendor, maintains instrument trays by recommending replacement purchases to their supervisor. The incumbent operates and performs routine maintenance on the sterilizers, such as cleaning, paper roll and graph replacement, and performs and documents biologic and chemical monitoring procedures. The incumbent maintains the decontamination and assembly areas in good order, and performs other duties as directed, which may include, but not limited to, assisting with patient care, room cleaning, answering phones and transporting patients.

As an Instrument Tech, you will ensure the availability, cleanliness, and functionality of surgical instruments and equipment.

Every day you will meticulously clean, sterilize, assemble, and inspect surgical instruments and trays, operating sterilization equipment and maintaining accurate records.

To be successful, you will demonstrate meticulous attention to detail, a comprehensive understanding of sterilization principles, and efficiency in a fast-paced environment, ensuring all instruments are sterile and ready.

  • Performs quality control by assuring that items sterilized are labeled correctly 97 - 99 % of the time.
  • Prepares and sterilizes surgical instruments and procedure trays according to prescribed methods to assure no more than 2 to 3 are returned by users for errors throughout the year.
  • Follows department and facility standards for infection control by wearing proper attire for assigned area and by following universal precautions 100 % of the time.
  • Processes and decontaminates instruments with no more than 2 3 items returned for re-cleaning due to improper technique during the year.
  • Completes appropriate daily testing and documentation of testing for sterilizer with no more than 2 errors per year.

Job Requirements

  • Completion of Certified Sterile Processing Program and six (6) months (1040 hours) Sterile Processing in an Operating Room environment or equivalent sterile processing training.
  • Certified Sterile Processing and Dist Tech or
  • Certified and Registered Central Service Technician or
  • Certified Sterile Processing and Dist Supervisor or
  • Certified Sterile Processing Dist Technician.
  • Proficient computer skills, demonstrated effective interpersonal and communication skills both verbal and written. 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of surgical instruments and the appropriate cleaning and decontamination processes and proper safety practices including infection control, body mechanics and hazardous materials, and medical terminology. 
  • Successful completion of job specific competency assessment.
