Responsibilities

Coordinates and develops education and training activities in a nursing specialty or subspecialty as well as supporting system-wide learning initiatives. An incumbent enhances the quality and cost-effectiveness of patient care by providing educational support to nursing staff and others in collaboration with medical staff, department directors, and Education Services.


Work requires professional nursing expertise in a nursing specialty or subspecialty and a thorough understanding of clinical nursing practices and standards in order to develop and provide clinical nursing education programs and to display credibility to clinical audiences, including RNs, Clinical Technicians, and other nursing staff. Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of adult education is also required.

Conducts needs analyses to identify immediate/future education needs and develops education/training programs designed to meet identified learning needs and comply with city, county, state, federal and The Joint Commission guidelines as applicable.

  • Confers with service lines and department management to identify immediate and future development requirements.
  • May create, write, update, and/or modify written and multimedia education modules, programs, curriculum, course outlines, and lesson plans that are consistent with overall course objectives and participant needs.
  • Incorporates delivery of care and clinical techniques appropriately to address special population needs in educational offerings. 

Conducts and evaluates education/training programs/activities provided to ensure they are consistent with meet identified learning needs, including classroom training.   

  • Implements programs in accordance with city, county, state, federal, and The Joint Commission (TJC) requirements where applicable.
  • Holds classes and provides resources for educational opportunities.
  • Coordinates and delivers Nurse Residency education in nursing specialty or within major education program.
  • Provides specialty knowledge-based education to groups outside specialty area, as well as teaches regional classes outside specialty area. 

Develops consistent standards and processes for education at facilities within the clinical specialty; consults with stakeholders to facilitate consistent implementation and provides consultation to make consistent processes and standards for education at all facilities within the clinical specialty.

  • Develops consistent processes and standards for education at facilities within the clinical specialty. 
  • Collaborates regularly with Unit Based Educators to ensure consistent processes and standards for education.
  • Provides clinical specialty information.
  • May assist multiple departments with educational initiatives. 

Participates in the development, revision, and update of both clinical and educational department-specific policies, procedures, and protocols.

  • Develops models and processes, and reviews and revises education services materials. 
  • Reviews procedure revisions to ensure clinically sound procedures and best practices.

Supports the education department’s quality improvement initiatives and incorporates quality improvement techniques into work performance.

  • Participates on performance improvement team(s).
  • Uses course evaluations to improve and update educational offerings. 
  • Attends unit meetings, department staff meetings, education department meetings, and other internal and external meetings as requested by Education Services leadership.
  • Reports results of meetings and potential impact to FHS to appropriate personnel or leadership.
  • Engages in opportunities for professional growth. 

Performs related duties as required.


Qualifications

Education/Work Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing, and three years of recent nursing experience in Critical Care or Medical/Surgical
    that demonstrates the attainment of the requisite job knowledge, skills and abilities.
  • Previous work experience in the education/training of healthcare providers is strongly preferred.
  • Master’s degree in a related field is strongly preferred.

Licensure/Certification:

  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse by the Washington State Board of Nursing.
  • Current healthcare provider BLS certification.
  • Certification or history of certification in nursing specialty or staff development preferred.
